Widening Access and Participation Sub-Committee

The Widening Access and Participation Sub-Committee (WAPSC), reports to Educational Partnerships & International Affairs Committee and has a remit to keep under review and, as appropriate, advise and make recommendations in relation to the University's Access Agreement, Widening Participation Strategic Assessment and student application and entry profiles. Furthermore WAPSC has a role in overseeing and monitoring the development and implementation of a programme of innovative activities to help the University achieve its aims in relation to widening participation thus maintaining its position as a sector leader in widening access to higher education. Drawing its representation from Faculties and Departments, WAPSC is tasked with bringing about an institution-wide understanding of the objectives, policies and practices pertaining to widening access and participation.

Bursaries

Ulster offers bursaries of up to £1,070 for each year of the course. They are in addition to any government grants you may receive and do not have to be paid back. Bursaries are designed to help students with course related costs such as books, equipment, travel or childcare and the total annual expenditure on bursaries by the University is currently around £4 million.

Outreach to Children from Care

The Univeristy of Ulster encourages applications from students and will advise young people who have been looked after by their Local Authority in foster or residential care. If you are leaving care or have previously spent time in care and are thinking of applying to the University, there is a range of services and provision that the University of Ulster can offer you.

University of Ulster Widening Participation Strategic Assessment 2009

This report presents the University's revised Widening Access and Participation Strategy for the period 2009/10 to 2011/12 and considers the progress made to date. Widening Participation (and/or Access) is defined by the University as:

"Activities designed to increase the participation in Higher Education of those from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds, other groups not represented proportionately amongst the Higher Education population, and those with disabilities."
